Doing the right thing-

I am not exactly sure how this concept of doing the right thing got twisted around into I am a bad person if I choose to take care of myself emotionally and physically.

I was having a conversation with someone earlier today and we were discussing how some people, generally women but definitely men are also included, have this misconception that even if they are being treated poorly they must always do the right thing.  This is true to some degree, you really should be the bigger person and do the right thing, however, sometimes that means that we need to draw a line in the sand and protect our own, individually or collectively.

It took me a long and mostly unhappy relationship to figure this out.  Being a good person and doing the right things are commendable character traits there is no doubt about that, but who said that we have to be mistreated in order to be 'doing the right thing'.  We have a right as human beings, a God given right to be valued as individual gifts to this world.  We all have something to give and there is no reason that you should continue to 'do the right thing' when someone is abusing you, emotionally, physically or otherwise.

I am certainly open to conversation about this topic, and I am definitely not saying that we immediately give up on others who mistreat us once, twice or sometimes even three or more times.  What I am saying is that we need to evaluate how the mistreatment from the other party is affecting our lives overall.  Is it a positive something I am going to grow and learn from, does this person truly not understand, does this person need professional help, do you see this person changing their behaviors?  All questions that should be considered and I am certain if I were to outline this topic I could come up with at least 20-30 more evaluation type questions.

When someone sucks the life out of you with their drama and their mistreatment and you feel icky when you see a text or a phone call coming in, if your first reaction is 'oh geez, what now' please, I implore you.... STOP.  Think and evaluate that relationship honestly.

Be true to yourself, realize your worth, find your happiness and live life to the fullest.  Life is just too short to put up with the bullshit and the drama.

If you have found this little thought to be helpful or thought provoking, I would love to hear from you.  Please comment below and let's expand this conversation.
